The most useful way to approach this question is to work from measurements taken from your own yarn and project whenever possible. Crochet and knitting are affected by tension, fibre, stitch structure and tool size, so reference charts are a starting point rather than a substitute for a swatch.
How to approach it
Start by identifying the values you actually know from the pattern, yarn label or finished sample. Keep units consistent, and separate exact mathematical conversions from estimates. If the project has a repeating stitch pattern, shaping, borders or multiple colours, include those constraints before rounding the result.
A good calculation should also show its assumptions. This is especially important when estimating yarn, finished dimensions, time or price. Avoid false precision: a useful range plus a clear explanation is often more trustworthy than a single exact-looking number.

Before committing to a large project, test the result on a small sample. Wash or block the sample when that is relevant to the finished item, because the dimensions can change.
